A man who had been working on maintenance for a gym faced an unwelcome surprise on his day off when a colleague gave him a call. He told him that the business was planning on doing something different. As a result, his position was going to be terminated.
Confused and angry, the man questioned his manager when he went back to the workplace to drop off his keys. He was not forthcoming with an answer and claimed that he should speak to his former coworker for more information. He left even more frustrated than before.

Fired and my manager “doesn’t know why”
Had been with my maintenance job working at a gym for 2 years now, and yesterday I was randomly CALLED by my COWORKER, mind you, on my DAY OFF. “Hey, this isn’t a pleasant phone call. Unfortunately, we have to let you go. We’re going in a different direction.” When I pushed for a reason, he repeated himself, “We’re just going in a different direction. Please come by whenever, and drop your keys off.” So today I go in to drop 'em off, and talk to my GM about what’s going on. I walk up to his desk and say, “Hey, I’m here. What’s going on?” And he just looked at me, and said “Oh, hey, what’s up?” Like everything was normal. I stood in silence waiting for him to ask for my stuff or start talking about what’s going on, but he continued on his computer for a little before about 5 seconds of silence, he says “what’s up?” again, so I say “I’m here to drop off my stuff. What’s going on?” And he straight up shrugged his shoulder, and didn’t say anything. So I continue saying “I was called on my DAY OFF by not you or even the assistant. But my COWORKER???” He then shrugged again and said, “I can ask him to reach out and talk to you.” So I just walked. Was fired OVER THE PHONE, ON MY DAY OFF, BY SOME COWORKER, NO REASON GIVEN, and my OWN BOSS DOESN’T KNOW WHY?

They know why but aren’t open to having a discussion with you about it.
You’re right to feel insulted in how they conducted themselves. But typically, the reasons given are bogus and not useful anyways.
If the real answer is “we just don’t like you,” they’ll never admit it anyways.
Send an email to your general manager confirming your understanding. Dear General Manager this is to confirm my termination on (date) by ________. No reason was given at that time. When I approached you on (date) you did not acknowledge my termination or the reason. As instructed I delivered all of the keys to ___________ on. (Date). Thank you for the experience.
File for UE immediately. My guess they will all deny it and claim you walked out.
Oh, your boss knows why.
He was being dodgy because he is spineless and did not want to have this difficult interaction with you. That's why the COWORKER called, and why they kept going "we're going in a different direction." Somebody ordered that poor schmuck to do the dirty work they were too afraid to do, and probably didn't tell them why or told them to not discuss it and so they fell back on cheesy phrases.
Get the reason in writing. The Unemployment Office is gonna wanna know why you don’t work there anymore. They’re supposed to tell you why.
