WIBTA if I reported my mail lady?
My husband lost his wallet on the train a few weeks ago. It had his entire life in it. His ID, green card, house key, and unfortunately, even his wedding ring that he keeps in it while he works. We had to reorder everything immediately because we leave for our wedding in Europe in less than 2 months and didn’t want to risk it.
-
About 2 weeks after he lost it, it arrived at my parents house (that’s the address we have everything under). Some kind person took it upon themselves to mail it to us.
Here is the weird part…

The envelope arrived open. We bumped into our mail lady and she admitted she was the one to open it. She said she didn’t recognize the name on it. My husband has been getting mail here for almost 2 years so that’s impossible. And if she meant the person who sent it, why would that matter if she recognized the name? My mom said she is a very nosey woman and asks her inappropriate questions about her mail all the time. When we bumped into her she went on a rant to my husband and he had trouble understanding her (he moved here less than 2 years ago from Europe so his English isn’t perfect). She looked at me and goes “What?? Does he not understand a word that I’m saying???”, She asked us what he was doing on the train when he lost the wallet as if that’s any of her business.
-
Here’s the problem. Everything in the wallet was there except his wedding ring. Which to me is the most important item. Not only was it $700, but it has sentimental value and it’s engraved with my name and wedding date. That was the only thing that couldn’t be replaced and is missing.
-
I’m ready to report the woman. Not only did she commit a crime, but she admitted it straight to our faces. 3 witnesses. A felony. My mom is telling me not to because she could lose her job, pension, etc. I don’t care. For all I know she could’ve stolen the ring herself. Or when she opened it, it could’ve fallen out. I’m furious and feel she should absolutely deal with the consequences of her actions.
-
So WIBTA if I reported my mail lady for opening my envelope herself and then delivering it opened?

Yeah that’s what makes it worse. It’s not just a mistake, it’s invasive and shady. Opening someone’s mail and then acting weird about it after is a huge red flag
-
exactly this!! like opening it "by mistake" is one thing but then getting defensive and nosy about it?? that's not someone who made an innocent error, that's someone who got caught and is trying to play it off. report her 100%
-
Agree about the duty to report her. She's probably doing this or worse to lots of people. There's a reluctance to report carriers because if she doesn't get fired she will behave even worse if she finds out you complained, and that the next carrier will be worse. I'm getting decent service now, but for years had incompetent, bad service. I complained only for the most egregious service and no one ever got fired.

There are certainly times when you should turn the other cheek and not potentially ruin someone's livelihood. We should all aim to be kinder to each other and build community.
This is not one of those times.
She's been nosy long before this incident, she's been weird long before this incident, hell she's been strange towards your husband long before this incident, so I cannot believe that for as long as she's been a mail carrier and as nosy as she is, that that is the first piece of mail she's ever opened. Shes abusing her authority and position to look into people's private lives and absolutely needs to suffer the consequences of committing felonies.
You build a trustworthy and kind community by expelling these types of people, not allowing them to continue, unchecked.
