Boss making $415K rants to poor employee about first-class international plane tickets costing $20K each: 'My boss makes a mockery of people who fly economy.'

Does she know how out of touch she sounds? 

It can be incredibly disheartening and uncomfortable to work for the ultra-rich. I'm not talking about your average, run-of-the-mill boss. Every employee knows that their boss makes more money than they do and can therefore afford a more luxurious lifestyle. Your boss might feel free to eat out every night of the week while you pack sandwiches for lunch and dinner. Your boss might travel when they take their PTO, while you "indulge" in a staycation that costs you nothing. It's a bummer that your work isn't as "valuable" as your boss's, but if they're a normal person, that's incredibly valuable. 

It's so much more difficult to work for a rich person who never denies themselves anything than for a normal high earner who doesn't let it get to their head. Rich people who see everyone who is poorer than them as inferior make the workplace miserable. They only care about themselves, and because people rarely say no to them, they get to do so with very little pushback. They can't even imagine what it's like to earn $100K per year, let alone $50K. 

The employee in this story has to deal with his boss complaining about the price of international first-class plane tickets. Instead of being grateful that she even has the means to travel internationally, she loudly proclaims that she could ever take coach, even when first-class tickets are around $20K a pop. The worst part is she doesn't even know she's out of touch.

  • RubixRube There is something just so painfully entitled about the C-Suite and travel. I do travel once or twice per month for business. (I am a Department Director) I am always booked in economy, occasionally I have to share a hotel room. Recently as we are going through "difficult times" my per diem was cut from $50 to $20 (with the caveat that i could submit personal expenses if my per diem exceeded that for "business reasons". A business reason does NOT include being in a high cost area where

  • But I digress, while I am having a slumber party with a Coworker I have met once and trying to figure out the optimal way to feed myself on $20 daily, the VPs are flying first class, set up in suites and do not worry about per diem as they have corporate cards. It boggles my mind that if the VPs could fly business class, or perhaps get a standard room, Janet from Marketing and I's first introduction may not be trying to find out where the closest grocery store is so we can split a prepared salad
