Giant pig runs onto major highway to escape live-animal auction, gets heartwarmingly rescued by farm sanctuary just in time: 'She got the zoomies the second she reached the sanctuary'

If you had one chance to live, you would take it, right?

We don't know if we've ever shared this with you, readers, but we're vegetarian. Have been for 18+ years. We're not here to preach to you about why it's better, but this video, as posted on The Dodo's Instagram, might just be all the proof you need.

Robin was a pig bred for food. She's a big girl, pink and adorable, and she took a chance to save her own life. While on her way to a live animal auction, where she was going to be bought and used for meat, the trailer carrying her and the other pigs stopped on a major highway in traffic. Robin was able to sneak off of the trailer and escape into the grass on the side. She laid there until animal rescuers came to save her. Exhausted. Scared. 

Having never experienced any sort of freedom, Robin was practically paralyzed with fear. It took the rescuers a long time to get her into their trailer to take her to the sanctuary. But, as soon as she reached the sanctuary, something in Robin changed.

She saw other pigs roaming around, the humans around her treated her with kindness, and she, for the first time in her life, got the zoomies. The sanctuary employees describe her as a happy pig, social, and a huge lover of rolling in mud wallows. 

After watching this video, we wouldn't ever be able to eat a pig again. You don't have to become a vegetarian, but if you did, a lot more Robins would be able to experience the same kind of freedom Robin is now feeling. Just saying.

  • For those of you that are curious, we made the choice to become vegetarian when we were 17 years old. It was something we always wanted to do, but our mom always had the same answer: “I'm not cooking two meals, so you'll eat whatever I make.” A classic boomer response, so as soon as we moved out for college, we made the switch to vegetarianism and never looked back. We've never broken our commitment in over 18 years. You didn't ask, but if we can inspire one more person to understand that you don't need to eat animals to live, then we will have done our job for today.
