Mother-in-law invites herself on family car trip, refuses to accept boundaries

This family road trip has just expanded, because this person's mother-in-law simply invited herself along for the ride.

A family trip to the Caribbean sounds blissful! Soaking up the sun next to cerulean blue waters, snorkeling with your siblings, and even hiking to a waterfall. So much fun! This family is bound to make memories that will last a lifetime, especially since they're bringing along a large chunk of the family, including both grandmothers and a handful of teens. 

As they say, vacationers want to get there fast, and then take it slow. Not the other way around. 

This family seems like they're taking the long way to get to paradise by squishing every family member into one car, then driving together. 

What should they do about the MIL who is encroaching upon their driving plans?

  • It'd be one thing to invite yourself on a family trip to the Caribbean, because that sounds awesome. But the MIL here specifically invited herself to the car trip part… why? Just why? 

    Instead of flying herself in to the destination, or even just renting her own car, the MIL really wants in on the car trip. It already sounds like this car is packed full. Maybe the family can split up into 2 cars, giving everyone a little more room to spread out.

    Kudos to the daughter for being aware of her own emotions. It seems like she's strongly hinting that she doesn't want the MIL here either. All that nagging is really going to ruin the car trip, which could otherwise be a really pleasant experience.

  • communicate clearly or set boundaries with them. I step in and then I'm the enemy. There was a situation in the past where I was so upset I had a panic attack so I'm afraid of that happening again and not enjoying the trip.

    WorkingInterview1942 It's just too bad that the rental car company only has small cars that will only fit the four of you. MIL and niece will have to find another ride. That's your story and you and your husband should stick to it. Also talk to the rental car people and don't let your MIL change the reservation.

    Oops, they're all out of cars! What a shame! Guess grandma will have to get her own car. 

    No one would be to blame in this hypothetical situation. The MIL could steam all she wanted to, but hey, only so many people can fit in one car. She'll just have to find her own way there. 

  • NaryaGenesis Tell your husband he can drive his mom and niece in his mom's car and you will drive yourself, your mom and your daughter. Or he can tell his mom point blank that she is not coming along and neither is niece and she can drive herself. He can choose which choice he wants.
