Teacher Proposed Canceling Graduation Because All of Her Students Graduate No Matter How Low Their Grades Are

  • A high school teacher who doesn't think graduations mean anything anymore because all students at her school graduate, regardless of how they did academically throughout their high school careers.
  • We should cancel all graduations, because this generation of students didn't earn such an achievement.

I've been thinking about how hilarious it is that this generation goes the craziest when they graduate (twerking on stage, backflips, screaming) when they're the generation that earned it the LEAST.
  • A high school student walking across the stage at graduation, accepting her diploma, regardless of whether she earned it or not.
  • Everybody in my district graduates no matter what. So why even celebrate it? It literally doesn't make sense to me to celebrate a participation trophy.
  • A woman holds a small participation trophy, which serves as a way of giving awards to children who didn't accomplish anything, so they feel better about themselves.
  • You've got parents screaming in the stands and I'm just like.... your child cannot read or multiply. In my opinion, we should have an award ceremony in which the students that actually achieved an accomplishment will be
  • recognized (dean's list, sports banquet, clubs, etc). And while we're at it, cancel 5th grade graduation too.
  • Sure_Artichoke_3662 I heard someone say "Graduating High School is an expectation, not an achievement" and I felt that
  • ArmStriking6325 OP And a lot of them didnt even achieve it! We're all sitting there pretending these kids did the assignments and the hard work.... its just performative.
  • bestforward121 The world will be their wake-up call, and the bill for not taking their education seriously will come due before long.
  • BlkSubmarine Unfortunately, that bill will come due for all of us. The foundation of a democracy is a well educated populous.
  • HegemonNYC Whenever I see criticism of 'participation trophy' generation, I need to remind people that it is the adults who set the standards. Not the kids. The participation trophy generation is the current politicians, administration and boards. Not the youth.
  • pirateapproved Bro, they've been calling the kids the participation trophy generation for 25 years now. Like 3 generations have progressed into their 20's over that time.
  • Rich_Celebration477 We've gotten to a place where things are all image and no substance. The point is the robe and hat and party afterwards. Just the same way at the admin level it's just about having a good graduation percentage and a low failure rate, even if those things don't mean anything because nobody can fail or not graduate.
  • Emergency-Pepper3537 Not to mention the uptick in parents acting like they're in the WWE. No decorum nor class whatsoever.
  • NaveGCT I've never seen K-12 graduation as a celebration of academic achievement, I've seen it as a celebration of people's lives and the new stage they're beginning Whether or not they succeeded academically, this is still the end to a stage that encompassed their entire life experience for, to them, a huge fraction of their lives.
  • torisbagel can we also cancel middle school graduation?
  • SaveusJebus My kids' elementary school had a graduation for the 5th graders. I went to support my son, but it was the most pointless sh and other parents were acting like it was such a huge accomplishment and event. Dressing up for it, bringing their kids gifts etc.
  • tidedogs I love graduation! In my district only students who meet requirements walk. I'm sorry about your district's low standards.
  • snackorwack Same here. Our district has its flaws, but there are definitely students each year who do not get to walk at graduation whether it be because of not completing requirements or incurring disciplinary action.
  • EatsHerVeggies The world s ks right now. Everything is . If this is a moment where people are happy and feeling good about themselves, I say carry on. For some kids, this might be the last time they really get to feel that way. Or it might be a reason they push themselves on to the next level graduation. Or it might just be a reason to party and celebrate. I don't really care.
