It really is that simple for us. Having cats makes literally everything in life better. You go through the day, have the worst day in the world, and then you get back home and hear the pitter-patter of their little paws as they come to greet you, or you see them lying on your couch, calm and happy, and everything is instantly a little better in the world. Everything suddenly seems less bleak.
