The cleaning is what takes this from annoying landlord behavior into its own special category. Breaking and entering is bad enough on its own. Breaking and entering and then tidying up like some kind of uninvited house elf adds a whole new dimension to it. She did not just violate the space. She improved it, according to her own standards, and now the tenant is supposed to be grateful that her belongings got rearranged by someone she never agreed to let in.
And then there is the cash-only rent situation sitting quietly in the background of this whole story. Landlords who insist on cash only and get weird about paper trails are always a special kind of bold, because they are essentially betting that the tenant will never have a reason to make things official. Turns out illegal entry, a missing hairdryer, and some vanished earrings are exactly the kind of reasons that make things very official very fast.
The plot twist is that the candidate actually signed a lease, which the landlady announced proudly like she had solved a problem she created. Technically, she did solve it. She just also committed multiple violations in the process and is now somehow surprised that the tenant is not thrilled about it.
Reporting her for the illegal entry makes complete sense. Reporting her for the tax situation while you are at it makes even more sense. Some landlords make it very easy to stop being polite about the whole arrangement.
