Sensitive people have been called weak for as long as I can remember. From teachers to parents and even colleagues have said ‘They’re nice but too sensitive'. But I think they were all missing a huge part of the beauty in being sensitive. Feeling!
I would argue that sensitivity is one of the biggest blessings a person can have. Yes you may experience everything with such an intensity you think your heart might explode, but if you truly think about it, that is such a precious thing to feel. It allows you to transform boring into special. One day you might be walking home from work and smell some lovely flowers and randomly start tearing up because nature is so beautiful and so are the ordinary things. Or maybe you were grabbing a coffee with a friend and a the barista remembered your order for the first time and said ‘Your usual?’, and that small gesture made you feel completely seen and cared for. When you really think about it, sensitive people are blessed with such a immense sense of gratitude and curiosity we could all really learn from.

Yes, being sensitive is beautiful and rewarding. Yes it can also be extremely exhausting and consuming. Sensitive people learn how to deal with emotions from a very young age. Let me tell you, I feel old enough to say I have earned a Maters Degree on bottling a tsunami of tears during battling times. Second grade math prepared me for that. As a kid, of course you don't really understand why a slight change on a teachers tone my put you off, or why seeing an elderly person walk through the Walmart parking lot by themselves might feel like watching the saddest movie there is. But with time you grow up and become friends with all this big emotions and understand that empathy really is the most beautiful thing one can have. Even if it means giving the best slice of pizza to your friend, because how could you not.
And we also have to be real. Although yes, learning to manage our emotion is a skill one develops from very early on, sometimes life puts you in situations where you just can't really contain your tears. You start to feel your eyes watering, a giant knot in your throat starts forming, your voice starts breaking. ‘Don’t cry', Don't panic'. ‘Hold it in’, ‘Speak, you can cry later'. And well, let's just say that sometimes you have to let the teary eyes flow and try to get your point across with a full-on tomato face and a shaky voice. The right people will take you as seriously as if your mascara weren't all over your face and your eyes were as dry as the Sahara. It's okay my friend, at least you tried.

So to my fellow sensitive people out there, I see you. I also see you crying for a dog commercial, me too. Hand me the tissues please. And cry it out with some good ol' memes.
