• What makes this particular situation so satisfying is the order of events. The manager spent eighteen months carefully stealing small amounts, then panicked when someone asked about a single missing hour, then issued a written warning for a five minute tardiness, then tried to get that same person fired for keeping records of their own pay. Every move she made after getting nervous was worse than the one before it. By the time she put head office on speakerphone to report a serious breach involving payslip screenshots, she had basically handed over the presentation herself.

• The silence on that speakerphone is doing a lot of narrative work. Someone at head office heard the words rota screenshots and my own payslips and had approximately one second to process the fact that their branch manager had just called them to report her own victim for collecting evidence.
