To Clump or Not to Clump?: 15 Kinds of Kitty Litter Championed by Cat Pawrents

I cannot tell you how many times I changed my cat's litter for a million and one different reasons. Mainly because my cat is a little prince who is ultra particular. So I figured I would take the leg work out of this manic search for the purrfect cat littler by making this list of kinds of kitty litter that have been recommended and championed by feline pawrents and their cat kids.

You can imagine that the first place I turned to for this collection was Reddit's r/CatAdvice subreddit, a place where all kinds of cat pawrents congregate to ask and answer the most burning questions of the day. And to my delight I found a whole heap of answers to this age old problem of cat litter. Whether it clumps, whether it makes dust, whether it leaks, whether it becomes unscoopable, or whether your cat child simply hates it, there is always something seemingly amiss with our cat kids' litter. So I hope that with the 18 suggestions that other pawrents have proposed you might find a solution that works for you.

I made sure to include a wide range of options including kinds of litter that clump, kinds that don't, kinds that block odors and of course some natural options too. Now you might be asking yourself why I did not just focus only on the natural options, and I will tell you that I really wanted to. But the hard truth is that we can want natural products as much as we like for our purrincesses, but when they do not work well enough, or our fur babies decide they are not to their liking, we pawrents have to be reasonable and do what we can. So before you buy your 10th kind of kitty litter, take a moment to review the experiences of the feline pawrents who finally figured out their fur baby's litter situation.

    Ok_Wait_7463 I started with clumping litter (Odourlock Unscented) and it was good odour wise, but there were often small traces on the floor. I changed to Catit Pea Husk Unscented and it's been much better!

    mtn-cat Arm & Hammer Clump and Seal (or Slide) is the only litter I will ever use. It has a sandy texture so it clumps SO well and never leaves behind stinky bits of litter. It really helps to control the smell of the litter boxes.

    lovelifethg I get tofu litter personally. It clumps well and I find it has very good odour control and lasts longer than other litters between full litter box changes. I personally use the Vetreska brand

  • Ok, this is an interesting one. As you might have guessed this is one of the few natural options amongst the 18 options we have lined up for you. As opposed to the chemical laden options that are readily available, tofu litter has no harmful ingredients that could potentially cause your feline harm. Usually this would come at the cost of something, but it seems according to this pawrent there is little downside, and if anything only upsides. I cannot comment on the price of tofu litter, but if the health of your feline is your main concern then this might be a solid option to go for.

    Both-Gur570 Clumping clay litter tends to be the standard, but it is very dusty, so not great for asthma if you have that. Also really little kittens WILL eat it and thats no bueno.

    graciousbiscuit Our kitty wasn't liking the scented litter, so we switched to Boxie brand per my grandmas suggestion and he immediately used the litter afterwards. It's a clumping one, but the texture and lack of fragrance seemed to help him get comfortable

    [deleted] I love Dr. Elsey's Clean Air silica litter. Only downside is it tracks quite a lot. But it is amazing for smell control.

    spodderfod I got pidan tofu litter recently and I love it! Doesn't track too much (easy to vacuum though), no dust, clumps super well, very little odor.

    foxyyoxy Horse pine pellets from tractor supply. $8 for a 40lb bag lasts like 6 months. Works great in sifting system, or for the price just dump it twice a week and voila.

  • Another interesting suggestion for a natural alternative to the products developed by companies. Now from pawsonal experience I can tell you that this kind of litter is really great, it smells great, it is easy to clean and because of its large size it is dust free when you scoop it up. All sounds great right? Wrong. If you have a cat who happens to go number 1 a lot, this is the worst litter ever. It does not clump, the gaps between the litter let the liquid pool at the bottom of the tray and the pellets seem to really hold on to the smell. So take that into consideration when considering this option.

    xenniac Arm & Hammer Cloud Control is the absolute best clay clumping litter I've found. It has all the benefits of clay clumping litter (hard clumps, odor control, etc.) without the dust that gets everywhere and is so very bad for kitties' respiratory systems.

    13pinkpanther I started my kitten Lucky on Tuft & Paw back in June and he loves and it holds up much better than the world's best which i had used previously in terms of tracking and smell/odour which are my top two priorities of course!

    Special Kitty - incredibly affordable for how good of a job it does. Good clumping, decent odor control, low tracking. It is a bit more dusty, but not awful.

    Pine Pellets - Affordable, good odor control, non clumping, almost non-tracking, however it does get dusty if not cleaned often. Cats tend to be a bit pickier when it comes to pellets which is the only downside.

    World's Best Cat Litter Definitely on the pricier side, however it is corn litter which means it is safe to flush. Good odor control, and not very dusty with very minimal tracking.
