"Scary" tomcat who's known for being combative and too smart gets rescued for a quick TNR, spends one night in the comfort of a warm home, and completely changes, wanting nothing but love and cuddles

Some "mean" and "scary" stray cats are really just misunderstood softies. 

Cats have an aura around them that is very strong. It's impossible to ignore. They carry themselves regally, with confidence, and it is known to everyone that if you approach a cat who does not want to be approached, you might get smacked. Of course, some stray cats like humans more than others. They're willing to be petted, to be held, and then, they go on about their little cat business. Other cats though… some cats have a reputation in their neighborhood, and that reputation follows them around.

In my building, there are many cats. We feed them all. We do our best to TNR them, and so far, we have been really successful with all of them. Except for one. There is one adorable ginger in my building. He's new. I started seeing him only a few months back. And he is a mean one. Or at least, that is the reputation that he has gained. He doesn't let anyone approach him, and those who dare, are quickly scared away. You would think that he wants nothing to do with humanity, but I don't agree. Because he cries. A lot. When he sees you, as long as you are far enough, he will let out these heartbreaking yells, and I know, in my gut, that it's just a matter of time. 

Dusty, whose story was shared on r/Straycats, was exactly like that - scary but in need of love. It took three whole years for him to be caught for a TNR, then another multiple months for him to be caught again to have his teeth fixed. But he didn't even need that. Before the teeth appointment, he spent one night in his human's home, and all it took was that one night of warmth and love for him to turn into the squishy lovebug that he is.

  • He really did have that look about him at first. We're not shocked people would think he's mean. But it was just the look. The dirt and crustiness. Under all that, a total loveball.

    I've had this massive tomcat visiting my yard and fighting my cats for the last 3 years. He looked really rough and I've been trying to trap him for TNR for a while but he's too smart. I finally got him, we call him Dusty, cause he's been dusty and crusty.

    During his neuter the vet told me he has really bad teeth and he needs to get some removed cause he's in pain but I needed to come back in with him another time.

    It's taken me 2 months to trap him again but this time I kept him overnight in my hallway and he experienced a calm and quiet night that the day after he was a completely different cat.

    He basically walked into the carrier and after his teeth surgery I needed to have him on a antibiotics for a week and he's done nothing but sleep in my bed, asked for cuddles, thrown himself at me and had the biggest glow up (see before and after pics).

    My 5 cats hate him but I can't put him back on the street again, so I guess welcome home Dusty. We'll make it work somehow.

    sharmeelala OP They're all rescues and kinda know the drill with me always bringing home fosters and abandoned kittens, they'll come around, they have no other option lol

  • They will come around not only because they won't have a choice but because just like he has won you over, he will win them over. We're not concerned at all.

    sharmeelala OP He will never again need to look for another meal or a safe place to sleep. He js safe with us and so very loved. He survived 5-ish years on the streets, the only way is up for him.

    Carrie_1968 Kitties with bad teeth often won't groom themselves, as he looks so disheveled in the first photo. Kitties LOVE to groom and be clean, and you're giving him that ability again! Not to mention how you're taking him off the street and away from all the ugly cat fights out there.

    MySaltySatisfaction He is so handsome. Dusty and crusty was a accurate description. Thank you for helping him with his health care and for letting him realize that he is a indoor boy at heart. Vet give you any idea how old he is?
