‘They said that it would be animal cruelty’: Dog shelter demands adopted dog’s return after dog mom pays for medical treatments that helped pup walk again, and after years of court battles she finally won official ownership of her dog

When you adopt a doggo to give them a furever home the last thing you would ever expect is for the shelter to ring up one day and demand that you return the dog after having done nothing wrong. But to the dismay of this dog mom, that is exactly what happened.

Reddit's r/LegalAdviceGerman subreddit is a place where all sorts of legal german language questions are asked, but this story is one of the only ones that is slightly less about the law and a whole lot more about the dog caught in the crosshairs of the law. It is a tale that has thankfully been translated for our understanding and one that sadly goes to show that you cannot put your faith in shelters and rescues like you might have thought you could. Of course those of you who have read several of the dog rescue stories we share here will know that there is no shortage of sad stories when it comes to animal organizations. But this tale has quite a different twist to even those stories.

For in this tale our pup is recalled to the shelter from which they came. Not because their pawrent was neglectful, not because their pawrent lied on their application, but because their pawrent had the gall to take life saving action and get her darling doggo an operation that would allow her to actually walk again after being adopted disabled. And once the rescue got wind of the fact that the pupper was now in good condition they could not wait more than a second to sink their teeth into the succulent opportunity to get their hands on the dog once more.

How in the heck does someone have the gall to respond positively to a message about your adopted pupper now being able to walk again, and then take all the pawsitivty to such a negative place by asking for the dog’s return? It is like selling your car, letting someone else pay to fix it and then to come back and demand the car back. Totally unhinged, unreasonable and unbelievable. We can only assume that someone at the shelter is suffering from a broken brain and cannot function properly.

  • Goodness, this would have broken us if we were in this brave woman’s position. To face an established organization that is blaming you for things that did not even happen and in front of police no less is one heck of a tough spot to be in. After all, this woman must have been reeling from having put her faith in this organization. Trusting that they would let her do her part now that the doggo was in her hands and custody. But as will soon be revealed there was a very scummy reason this shelter wanted their doggo back so desperately.
