A man had been dealing with a difficult job situation after he got laid off from his tech job earlier in the year. This came as a surprise, but he managed to find a temporary, part-time retail role to give him an income while he looked for something more permanent after this redundancy.
The issue was that he was living with his parents, and they disapproved of his current work after he had to leave a better-paid and more prestigious job. He felt like he was doing all he could by applying for roles and helping his parents out with their lives.

Parents think a part-time job is not a job.
I’ll keep the story short. So the beginning of this year I got a job paying 55k a year which with my spending habits, is enough for me to support myself. Fast forward 4 months and I was laid off (it honestly caught me by surprises since my higher ups were telling me how well I was doing). I was working 40-50 hours a week but now I’m back at my old job and not only is the pay lower, I’m part time, but still lived that frugal lifestyle of spending $50 on groceries, getting gas etc that my largest purchase this year was an $80 ergonomic office chair.
While I work ~20 hours per week I spend most of my mornings applying for jobs and have about 60 applications in total.
I am not afraid to work (I literally commuted 1 hour to work and was in traffic for an hour after work so my 9-5 was more so 7:45am-6pm).
Now I’m back to a retail job where I work mostly closing shifts from 4-11 / 6-11 which I think is why my parents are a bit upset of how did someone educated go from a cushy job to working retail part time.
Nothing I do seems to appeal to them. I fix their phones, ensure our internet is up when the signal is funky, English is not their primary language so I schedule and take them to the doctors (they also are old and have medical issues that prevent them from that).
Right now I’m just constantly saving money since I’m not a heavy spender whatsoever though I’m also applying to both part time and full time jobs and even thinking about gig work like Walmart spark since I have a friend that did it when he lost his jobs and he had more than me to pay.
I’ve reached out to hiring managers and many have told me that they’re on a hiring freeze and due to my condition at least from what my doc told me, I can’t / shouldn’t lift stuff that’s 50 lbs (hence why I mainly just do cardio at the gym).
So it’s not like I’m bringing in zero income, it’s that my paychecks are low and I’m trying to find some sort of addition to be out of the house more hence possibly gig work like Walmart spark.
Which I’m not sure if my parents would be happy about that since I was offered a pizza delivery option for a well known chain and my father told me no. But from what I read about gig work is that you mainly accept an order and pick it up and drop it off at X location like going on some sort of side quest.
