Confidence is a strange thing when it's built entirely on a false assumption.

A garden centre visit turned unexpectedly comedic when a total stranger decided, with total certainty, that a fellow shopper was actually an employee, and no amount of denial could talk him out of it.

It started innocently enough. A man shopping for gardening goods rushed up asking about rhododendrons, and the shopper, trying to be helpful despite not working there, pointed him toward a bay that seemed likely. When the plants weren't where suggested, the man didn't reconsider his assumption, he doubled down on it. Insisting he'd been "served" by this same person the week before, he brushed off the direct correction with an oddly musical certainty, as if repetition alone could make the claim true. That's often how misplaced confidence works: it doesn't need evidence, just conviction stated loudly enough.

The real turn came when he reappeared to criticize the nonexistent job performance a second time. At that point, the shopper's response, flagging down actual staff and asking them to help the man, was less an act of customer service and more a clever way of forcing reality to intervene. Naturally, being handed off to an actual employee didn't clarify anything. Instead, it prompted a threat to report the shopper to a manager, for a job that was never theirs to begin with.
