Boss said "dress professionally or go home" so I went home

This was like 3 years ago at a call center job. We had a casual friday policy. Everyone wore jeans t shirts whatever. Been like that for years. New manager comes in one friday sees me in a band tshirt and says infront of everyone "that is not professional, dress properly or go home."

I said okay. Picked up my bag. Clocked out. Went home. He calls me like an hour later asking where I am. I said you told me to go home so I went home. He said he didnt mean literally. I said you didnt say that.

HR backed me up. Got paid for the full day. Manager never did casual friday again which made everyone hate him not me. Worth it.

CoderJoe1 HR backed you up? I've never heard of that happening before. Amazing! Do you have leverage over them? Are you related to the Director of HR?

memypassportandi I did something similar when I was in high school. We had a chemistry teacher who wasn't all that nice, and one day as class was starting, he told us that we needed our textbooks. We had never needed to bring in our textbooks before, and he didn't give us any sort of a heads up. So I said, "I didn't bring mine. Do you want me to go get it?" He said yes, and off I went.

I lived about an hour walk from my high school, but a friend lived a bit closer, so I went to her house, grabbed her bike, and used that to get home and back to school. I got back just after the class had finished and the next group of students was in the chemistry classroom. I sat down, big grin on my face, and he looked at me and said, "Just go."

I went on to English class, where most of my chemistry classmates were already seated, and I got a round of applause as I held the chemistry book above my head.

MajorDraw3705 I've had HR conspire with me on how to circumvent a useless manager. Once in a while, HR is almost useful.

AJourneyer As HR in a small company, I work really hard to not be the type of person so many people have encountered. Posts like yours just make me want to work harder at it. This isn't a mean or critical message - it's a thanks for the reminder message.
