Manager sends home fast food employee for going to the bathroom: 'Clock out and go home'

Should a manager be able to disavow the basic rights of employees on a whim?

A slacker is one of the most frustrating kinds of workers to deal with as a boss, and certain industries tend to attract them more than others. Nonetheless, it is possible to be a bit too overzealous in an attempt to prevent slacking, and there are also plenty of bad bosses out there. Some managers just choose to believe the worst about their employees because it serves their power trip, not because it is true.

Anybody with any work experience knows that management can make or break all types of jobs, and dealing with a supervisor who will stop at nothing to try to control and belittle you can be exhausting. It is enough to make a person quit a role that they otherwise enjoy, or really need. It is unwise to underestimate the lengths that this kind of manager will go to in their pursuit of whatever the heck kind of workplace they have decided is the good kind. It only adds to the problem that fighting back against this behavior may well cause a lot more problems than it solves, no matter how justified.

  • A fast food employee had been in her job for only a month and had already gotten into a difficult situation with one of the restaurant's managers. She asked the owner of the store if she would be able to take a bathroom break in a quieter moment, and while she was washing her hands, the manager came and told her to go home.

    Only when she pressed the matter did the manager tell her that she was sending her home because she disapproved of how often she used the bathroom, although this was due to a medical condition. She objected to this, as she always asked somebody in management before she took a bathroom break.

I work 8hr shifts 5 days a week, usually from morning to late afternoon, and I rarely get breaks. They have a no sit/ squat down policy.
