I went through 4 interview rounds with a medium- sized company, and after the last team interview I got a rejection email.

Honestly, it affected me more than I expected, because I felt like I had done well and that my chances weren't bad.

I replied to the person in HR and asked if they could share any feedback with me.

About five days later, she called me and said they felt they might have made a mistake.

She asked me if I was open to speaking with the department head again, because she wanted to understand a bit more about my career plans.

In that call, she spent most of the time asking me about my work experience, why I made certain decisions in my career, and how sure I was that I could handle the role.

I told her I was confident, because I genuinely am confident about that. In the end, she said this would be the final discussion and that she would review things again with HR and the team.

If everyone agreed, they would send me an offer within 3 days. Honestly, I don't really know how to understand this whole situation.

sortiz1965 Their first choice didn't work out so they are going to you. Take the win. I once got a rejection email for a job I really wanted. I sent an email to the hiring manager thanking her for the opportunity, etc. She calls within five minutes saying there's a mistake because they were going to offer me the job. It was an HR system error. I took the job and spent six great years at that company.

Zealousideal_Age_822 We once hired someone for a role. She accepted officially. I waited 48 hours, told the other candidate we were interviewing that she didn't get the job. 2 days later, the first person backed out. I called the 2nd person with my tail between my legs and told them what happened, and that I completely understand if she didn't want any part of us, but that we would really love her to join the team. She did, and was an awesome employee. The kicker is that the person who bailed wa

kdollopolis You were likely their second choice. Allow me to caution you from being low-balled on the offer. They clearly do not want to execute another search. But the requiring you to meet with the department head again, and essentially "prove" they made the "wrong choice", might get you to psychologically doubt yourself enough to take whatever number they throw at you. Don't let them get away with it!

OkIntroduction5150 My first "grown up" full time job I got because I was the second choice and the women they had hired just didn't show up on what was supposed to be her first day. I wish I could thank her. That's where I met my best friend of 20 years.

Sternakseesall Same thing happened to me. The person they hired over me would have to relocate which they agreed to and then backed out 3 days later. But HR was honest with me about it which does not like your situation.

RandallSG I have on more than one occasion had someone accept an offer and subsequently turn it down. It is unfortunate for the other applicants because we typically send our "regret" letters after we have an acceptance. If this is what happened in your case, your potential employer is trying to do the right thing... but stuff happens. I have had new hires, just not show up... which is really difficult for everyone. Be careful if this is you... karma can be a B. Edit: This is not dating; it is o
