Employee expresses frustration when coworker mocks her for wearing the same outfit to work on different days: 'You're wearing that again?'

Doesn't every job kind of require a uniform?

While times have changed and dress codes are not necessarily as strict in many workplaces as they once were, most working people have that part of their wardrobe that they designate as 'work clothes'. Even if they work a job with no official uniform, they are likely to put some thought into what is and what isn't appropriate to wear when they are on the clock. Heck, even WFH warriors have particular pairs of sweatpants that fit into their work days.  In most roles, it is just a part of basic professional etiquette.

As a result, a lot of employees are not going to be treating the workplace as a fashion show. They want to wear the kind of thing that represents them as a professional and avoids any action from HR. There is every likelihood that what they choose as their work wardrobe is pretty boring and repetitive, not least because most corporate environments are not big on rewarding creativity. So long as they look appropriate and presentable, their clothes should not have to be an issue. Most peoples' work clothes are not designed to be conversation starters, or even to attract too much attention.

  • An employee didn't think that the clothes that she wore to work were an issue. She was not somebody who thought a lot about fashion, and she knew that this was reflected in her dress sense. So long as her clothes were clean and she looked ready to do her job, she didn't think that they needed to cause any problems.

    However, she faced an issue with a judgmental coworker who insisted on commenting on what she was wearing. She questioned why she might wear the same outfit multiple times in a week, and encouraged other colleagues to judge her as well.

  • I was honestly embarrassed. Like, why do you have to point it out in front of everyone? If you noticed that I repeat my clothes, fine, but why turn it into a joke and make everyone else laugh about it? I don't think there's anything wrong with repeating clothes, especially when they're clean. Not everyone has the money, time, or interest to wear a completely different outfit every single day.

Deep down she is simply resentful over the active effort she makes and money spent in order to achieve the hopeful impression of others based on her own insecurities.
