The only job a wedding guest should have is enjoying themselves.

There is no question about it: planning and setting up the average wedding is darn hard work. While it is meant to be a special day for both the bride and groom to look back on fondly for the rest of their lives, the stress of making everything perfect can overwhelm the happiness they feel about tying the knot.

While the bridal party, groomsmen, family members, and wedding planners are supposed to help with much of the craziness, that can still leave a couple feeling like they have a lot to do. It is only natural to want as much support as they can muster from willing helpers who are also invested in making the day go well.

However, there is a difference between a close person to the bride or groom actively volunteering their services and insisting that somebody has to put the work in without their knowledge. With all the thought and logistics that go into weddings, everybody involved must give enthusiastic prior approval that they want to do their bit. If that doesn't happen, it is a recipe for resentment and things potentially going wrong.

  • Redditor r/BlundeRuss was told by his groom friend to arrive at 10 AM for his wedding. He turned up with his wife ready to be a guest, but then realized that this friend expected him to help with setup, and that the ceremony was not for another two hours.

    The guest refused, on the principle that he hadn't been told that he would be doing this. The groom was not happy that he didn't want to lend his assistance, leaving him wondering if he had been unreasonable.

    My male friend (I'm male too) invited me to his wedding and told me to be there at 10am. I turned up with my wife around 9.45am. The wedding was actually at midday. He deliberately got me there two hours early so he could rope me into putting up gazebos, dragging tables out and carrying loads of equipment up a steep hill.

  • I turned up dressed smart, ready for a wedding. He basically said he picked me because I'm strong and do DIY for a living. I'm not the best man. I'm not even one of his six ushers (none of which were there yet, because they were "getting ready"!!). He had about 100 guests he could've asked. I wasn't even invited on the stag. He could easily have sorted the setup the day before or hired people.

His response was: "Hey dude I'm giving you a free meal later, you could at least lend a hand to earn it back."

    squirreltrap NTA- but your friend sure is. He should have been upfront about his plans for your help. You can't ever assume people can just do free labor on the spot... such an AH move. I'd honestly be reevaluating my friendship at this point
