  • Am I in the wrong for telling my friend's partner they couldn't join my birthday dinner?

I (30 M) had my birthday dinner planned for about a month and made a reservation for 8 people at a pretty small restaurant. Everyone confirmed a few days beforehand. The day of the dinner, one of my friends texted me saying he was bringing his girlfriend because she "wanted to
  • come." I told him I hadn't planned for another person and the restaurant had a strict table size, but he said it shouldn't be a big deal. When they showed up, I told him I couldn't add her to the reservation. He got annoyed and said I was making a big deal out of nothing and that I should have just let her sit with us. I told him I wasn't going to make the
  • restaurant rearrange the table or potentially lose our reservation because he decided to bring someone without asking me. He ended up leaving with her and later told a couple of our friends that I embarrassed him in front of his girlfriend
  • Commenters came to this person's defense.

BeautyisaKnife let me guess...they've been together for 3 months? Oh well. He did u a favor by leaving and not complaining the whole dinner. Your bday dinner isn't about him
  • elizamonaco NTA you were perfectly clear
  • Irrasible No, no, no. He embarrassed himself, and you didn't save him.

  • bluebeardswife NTA. He embarrassed himself and he's the a hle here. Plans with reservations are firm. Thanks for not being an a hole to the restaurant staff.
  • JRAWestCoast Never waste your time with people who refuse to acknowledge a NO. You were clear. He did what he wanted which was selfish and wrong. You owe him no apology. He embarrassed himself in front of his GF, not you. Take this as a red flag re: friendship. YNTAH
  • MrTash999 NTA, he embarrassed himself because he couldn't take no for an answer. You had the reservation for a month, and it was only at the last minute he decided he wanted to bring his gf. Restaurants, especially when they are small and booked solid, hate when people try and add 1 extra person.
  • But the fact you dont mention this is a long term gf tells me its a brand new relationship. My guess is he was hoping to use your birthday to introduce her to everyone.
  • Significant_Rate8210 NTA - he's a child. He was trying to insist even after being told no can do. That's his problem.
  • NyuSeki NTA you can ask, but you cant expect someone to just accept another attendee. By his reaction though he is an AH. Get rid
  • LostAngeltwo I think your friend has boundary issues; first, not respecting yours, and second not having the balls to tell said GF "no." If he was concerned she'd break up with him over it then the relationship is too fragile to survive any how. NTA
  • ezbutneverconvenient NTA. I had a similar situation but with the genders reversed. We ended with the party split between two tables, and it screwed up the point of the evening. That friend quickly withdrew from everyone in the group and within two years had ghosted everyone and moved out of state. Believe people when they show you where their loyalties lie
  • Rich-Pirate-4745 Yeah, it's totally your fault that changing the size of a reservation isn't possible lol Nta.
  • IDoNotShare NTA. You planned your birthday party at a nicer restaurant. And when specifically asked by your friend about him brining his gf you gave him a specific answer. No. Despite that he chose to bring her anyway. So what happened is not you embarrassing him in front of his gf. Instead he embarrassed himself.
