This trend is all about embracing the things that we don't traditionally embrace. Anything can be “kinda chic” if you paste the text over it. You're elevating the average, day-to-day experience to another level. Your normal life stops being your normal life and becomes something greater: fodder for social media. We're obsessed with adding a layer of romance to everything we do in the course of the day, but the question remains: is this a good thing?
Of course, brands have taken over and some users have grown frustrated at just how saturated the trend is. We don't need Pepto Bismol telling us that it's “kinda chic” to carry Pepto Bismol. Their interests are too transparent. It's no accident that this format lends itself so well to advertising, though. The trend is a way for users to sell themselves and their lifestyles, something that influencers have made their name doing. Everything reads as an advertisement, even if it's for the self. Instagram is the perfect place to do that.
It's exhausting to try and be perfect all the time. Some days are just going to be average, boring days. Not everything in life needs to be exceptional, even if the internet can make us feel like it should be. When everything on our screens is optimized to the pixel, it can feel like regular life just isn't up to snuff. The “kinda chic” trend is a way for us to feel like our normal lives are worth celebrating, but it's also just another way for the internet to make us feel like we're not doing enough. Our lives don't need to be “chic” for them to matter. And if everything can be declared “kinda chic," then doesn't that mean that nothing is?
