Couple live rent free in husband's sister's house, wife protests when husband chastises her for reacting to sister spilling drink on the floor: 'I don't respect her 'home ownership''

How many rights do you have when you are living in somebody else's house?

When it comes to having a place to live, there are not really any easy options. Being a tenant makes you subject to the whims of a landlord and possibly roommates as well, whereas actually owning a property makes you fully responsible for all maintenance, taxes, and maybe even the wrath of an HOA.

Some also rely on the option of using the generosity of friends and family to keep a roof over their heads, which can come with its own set of problems. The financial cost may end up being less, but the emotional cost can be far greater. Spats between relatives happen in most families and are bad enough when everybody has their own house. Add living together in somebody else's property into the mix, and that can take things to another level.

When you have made somewhere your home, it is understandable to feel entitled to it. After all, it should be the place where you feel most comfortable. However, in any home that isn't technically your own, this is almost always going to come with terms and conditions attached. These can't always be contested.

A drink spilt on the floor following a prank, which enraged his wife and caused her to provoke her sister-in-law. He wondered if he had been wrong to remind her that the house wasn't actually theirs.
