Neighbors track apartment resident through doorbell camera pointed at front door: 'It feels like living under a microscope'

When does a commitment to home security turn into an unnecessary nuisance?

Surveillance is everywhere these days, so much so that the kind of monitoring once done only by institutions, governments, and businesses has trickled down to the average citizen. An increasing number of people wholeheartedly believe that they have a right to record others with subtle technologies attached to either themselves or their home, and from a legal perspective, they are not necessarily doing anything wrong. When it comes to the morality behind it, though, things get a little more questionable.

The likes of home surveillance cameras have their positive uses, but they can also create problems when they aren't used with clear and non-malicious intentions. It can become an issue with the neighbors, as few are going to enjoy the sense that they are constantly being watched when they are just trying to go about their normal business in the neighborhood. Some may argue that those doing nothing wrong have nothing to hide, but that logic doesn't really respect the right to privacy. It gets to a point where it is kind of weird to want to be monitoring the comings and goings of the people who live next to you.

  • I generally wouldn't mind a camera, except it's pointed at my door. I've seen those viral videos of ppl sharing doorbell videos of their neighbors coming & going. Commenting on their outfits, who they have coming over, etc. it's weird what ppl do. Unfortunately it's legal in my state.

  • They were resorting to desperate measures.

    Sometimes I use my patio door for short trips just to avoid their camera. But can't do this every time because it can't lock from the outside. Even then, they strain to look through their window or peek through the blinds whenever I park my car. When I catch them and look back, they snap the blinds shut. They are senior citizens acting like kids, and it is exhausting.

  • Retired_and_Relaxed I would walk backwards when leaving your apartment. When they review the video they won't know if you are coming or going. It's a shame they don't watch a reality show other than yours.
