It's not exactly a solution. You can't hike your way out of an overdue rent payment, a Slack message that starts with @, or the knowledge that right now, thousands of guys with a podcast microphone are explaining the economy to other thousands of guys with a podcast microphone. But it helps.

Ten years ago, I would've told you that walking in nature for fun was an insane thing to do. Are you voluntarily going uphill? In shoes that cost more than your regular shoes? So you can look at a tree that has never once liked one of your posts? Suspicious behavior.

Now, somehow, it's the only thing that makes sense.

Modern work has perfected the art of fake urgency. And it perfected it on our backs. Every email hits our inbox like a tiny evacuation order. Maybe that’s why hiking has become so appealing: it’s one of the few ways to peel the simulation off everyday life. You walk around for a while, breathe air that hasn’t been filtered through an office vent, and remember that human beings used to do this constantly, mostly because there was no choice and they were being chased by something.
