Got a legal threat from my old company over a glassdoor review. Is this even real?

The blacklisting threat deserves a very, v e r y slow blink. It has the same energy as a restaurant owner threatening to ban someone from eating any and all food forever because they left a one-star review. An employer can be angry, petty, and equipped with a letterhead, but none of that turns every unfavorable account of working conditions into defamation. Calling a former worker “disloyal” is cheaper than addressing why managers scream in meetings, why people leave quickly, or why a business needs intimidation to protect its reputation.

Still, a formal-looking message can make anyone nervous, especially when there is a new job to protect and no appetite for paying a lawyer to argue with a former boss who has decided criticism is a personal insult. The sensible move is not to panic or trade accusations over email. Save the original review, the threat, employment records, messages, and anything that supports the factual statements made, while checking whether the sender is actually counsel or simply someone in the company using a dramatic signature block.

The irony is that the company may have created the most convincing evidence of its culture after the employee already left. A workplace accused of being toxic responds to criticism with an ultimatum and a blacklist threat, then wonders why people think the review might be accurate.
