'She's been two timing me': Person rescues kitten stuck in a tree and adopts her, only to find out she belongs to a neighbor and has been using both their houses as her purrsonal all-you-can-eat buffets

Cats know that we have a weak spot for their cuteness, and they are not ashamed to exploit it. 

We are weak when it comes to cats. If you haven't guessed it by our jobs - what with us writing about cute cats every single day - then we're telling you right meow: we have a weakness for them. And we know that we are not alone in this. Many of you guys - the people in our audience - face the same issue. You're walking down the street, you see a cat, and everything else around you disappears like meowgic. You must stop, you must attempt to pet that cat. If you don't, you don't know what will happen, and truthfully, you don't intend to find out. 

Cats, over the centuries, have realized this about us. They know. They know that it takes one itty bitty meow, one slow blink, one roll onto their back to show us their fluffy belly, and we're doomed. Just like that, we're ready to give that cat a home. And we're not just saying that. We've been there. We've done that. That's how we have the cats that have. Because we are weak, and they know it. And they use it. Beginning-Try6882 on Reddit found that out the hard way.

They thought that they were simply saving a cat stuck in a tree. A classic. A bonding moment. This wasn't a simple rescue. It took time and effort. There was risk involved. And as a reward, they thought that they were being this kitten. She walked into their home, made herself at home. Everything seemed purrfect, until she disappeared. For two days, she was gone, and when she came back, it was with clear evidence that she belongs to someone else. 

See? She likes this new human because he saved her. And that's cool. But the previous home was feeding her too. And if they are both dishing out snacks, why not make the best of it? Cats don't simply know that we have a weak spot for their cuteness, they know how to exploit those spots in the ways that benefit them the most. And honestly? We love them all the more for it. m

    So I ended up having to bring a ladder on TOP of the roof. Then lean it against a tree then climb the ladder and some of the tree in order to get her down.

    Well she's been staying with me about a month now after this. In the morning she runs out the door, usually doesn't come back til evening time, then stays during the night.

    Well this has happened a few times before, and usually when I go out to smoke I just yell TIDBIT (I named her Tidbit), and she will eventually pop up.

    Then oday she just popped up, and I was holding her cause im so happy to see her, and I noticed she's been shaved on her belly with stitches and a small incision.

    So she really has an owner somewhere, and neither one of us knows about the other, and she has been staying here and there. I wish I knew who it was.

    But it's no one in my immediate neighborhood. Even the neighbor who I saved her from her tree said it wasn't her cat didn't know where it came from.

  • There legitimately was risk involved in this operation. And although this cat is not able to say it, and you may feel a little duped by the cat anyway, we will say it: thank you. Not everyone would have done what you did, and considering how much the kitten grew to like you following this experience, we can safely say that she probably really needed someone to come save her that day. So, thank you. Also, we agree with everyone in the comments. Try to find the owner. That ear tip being removed might mean that she was simply TNR'd, rather than that she belongs to someone else.

    mysterychongo Her left ear is tipped, which is done in TNR (trap - neuter - return). She likely doesn't have an owner. She was trapped in your neighborhood, spayed, and then returned. And she chose you. TNR is hugely important to controlling stray cat populations and I encourage you to learn about it and even get involved.
