Vegetarian wife of 6 years constantly complains that husband eats meat despite him going out of his way to make separate meals: 'I make dinner 6 out of 7 days a week'

Am I in the wrong for refusing to go vegetarian for my spouse?

My wife and I have been married for 6 years and together for 8 years. She has been a Vegetarian since she was 17 (we are both 31 now). Her reasons for being a Vegetatian has always been personal preference and she's noted in the past it doesn't bother her thay I eat meat, even offering to cook meat for me sometimes when we first got together.
To be clear, I am the family cook, I make dinner/meals 6 out of 7 days a week. I prepare her food with extra care so there is no risk of cross contamination. I've purchased her an air fryer and other appliances that are meat free so she can prepare her snacks with peace of mind. 95% of the meat I cook is either stove top or microwave (ie chicken nuggets etc)

She has confessed recently that she always assumed I would just become a vegetarian. This obviously did not happen, though I do not eat red meats at home and I dont eat pork at all (just personal preference). I do quite a bit of meal prepping and the chicken or salmon I cook can have a distinct smell that, unfortunately, makes my wife. queasy. I WFH and my wife doesnt work, so there isn't really a time for me to cook without her around.

This has become a point of contention more and more, resulting in increasingly escalated confrontations. We don't have a large house and it can be difficult for her to escape the smell. I usually try to confine my cooking/meal prep when she is sleeping in the morning or outside, but this doesnt seem to he enough. I will unfortunately not be going Vegetarian. AITA?

A husband and wife have an argument in the kitchen

Commenters gave their opinions and takes on the matter.

Frankensteins_Kid NTA. She married a meat- eater. Anyone who willingly chose to be with you, while secretly wishing/hoping that you would eventually change yourself for them one day is an AH.

Background-Bid-8149 Nta she didn't marry a vegetarian. You aren't a project for her to change Where your marriage goes from here tho?

seventythousandbees NTA. That's on her for not being honest about her real preferences and dealbreakers. Sounds like this bothered her more than she let on, but she assumed (as many do, unfortunately) that she'd just be able to convince you to change later on.

Technical-Region-669 Obviously NTA. She was with you for two years, got married to you without communicating this, and now on year EIGHT? It's an issue? What?

Kiekles I'm still stuck on you cooking most of the meals even though she doesn't work. LoIIIII. Then complaining about what you cook for yourself Imagine

SuperDoctorAstronaut NTA - I speak as a vegetarian of 31 years who also made that choice solely because I don't like to think about where meat comes from, so I probably shouldn't eat it. You can't make that choice for other people. I'm not sure what advice to offer re: the smell of cooking meat, though.

Internal_Courage5832 NTA but a 15 year long game manipulation from your wife is troublesome.

LL2JZ She cant expect you to stop eating meat. How would she react to you saying "I just assumed youd eat meat one day" She'd probably feel incredibly disrespected so the fact she views her wants and feelings above your own is telling

whatsyOurdamage NTA a personal preference is not everyone else's problem, it's PERSONAL. You've already been very supportive by buying her appliances that won't come in contact with meat. She's expecting way too much if she thinks that her spouse should change their diet for her.

CanAhJustSay NTA. She married you hoping you would change. The fact that you didn't is now offending her. She should have made it clear that this was a deal-breaker for her before you got married.

Resident Community285 NTA I am a strict vegetarian since birth, and I'm also passionate about animal rights/not eating animals, and my husband is a heavy meat eater lol. You are fully allowed to be two different people and have a marriage work. We have separate cast

irons but everything else we use interchangeably. I got used to the smell of very stinky meat smells in the house. Honestly the fact that you cook veg options for her every meal and work so hard to keep things separate is amazing.

JackTrades MasterNone NTA. I wouldn't either. She can't control what you eat. How are you cooking your stuff that it is that fragrant?
via FeeInfamous3921
kayjax7 NTA - although not as terribily incompatable as a couple being together, one child free and the other thinking they will change their mind, this is similar. She never has been okay with you consuming meat. She just put up with it hoping you will eventually change your mind.

Novafancypants NTA. If she wanted to be with a vegetarian she should have married one. It's her own fault for assuming you'd change. Ask her how ridiculous it would sound if you told her you figured she would just start eating meat

SusanGreenEyes If she doesn't work, why is she making the choice not to cook for the family? NTA
