Growing up on a farm is unlike any other experience. You really get to know the woods, you get to hear yourself think, and you get to hear what the wind has to say. It's true that the wind and the trees speak, if you only listen then you can hear. There's something beautiful but also eerie about living in rural areas. Lately I've been doing a deep dive into Appalachian folklore and history. The hills there are older than Saturn's rings, they're actually millions of years old, which is hard to believe. There's so much interesting info out there about these mountains. The Appalachians are spooky because there are certain rules about what to do when the sun goes down. During the day, it's a beautiful area with sunshine and green grass and serenity. But when the sun sets, everyone does the same thing. They close all the windows and even pull the blinds out so nothing can see inside the home. They lock all the doors. No one is supposed to go outside after dark because of spooky and spiritual things that live in the woods. If you hear a whistle you're not supposed to whistle back. If you hear your name called from outside you're not supposed to respond or open a door or window.
