A grad school graduate was skeptical of their former classmate, who had posted in the Facebook group for their class, asking people to help her and her kids. Their father had passed a couple of years ago, and the teenage twins needed a college fund. She wanted people to give her donations to build up the fund for her kids.
The classmate couldn't believe the lack of financial planning, especially as this woman had gone on to be a physician. However, they wondered if they were being too mean and stingy if they ignored her and didn't donate.
Would I be wrong if I don't donate to a former classmate's children's college fund?
Grad School classmate from 34 years ago just posted to our FB group that her children's father passed away recently. She was already divorced from the guy about 5 years ago (the last time she posted in that group btw). Nothing wrong with that, but it turned out that the point of the post was to ask us to donate to "establish a college fund" for her 15-year-old twins.

Which essentially tells me she doesn't already have a fund for that which seems insane to me just for starters, but to ask us, people she hasn't seen in 34 years, to donate seems quite presumptuous to me. This person is also a physician (she went to med school several years after we finished grad school) so I know she makes more than I ever did (retired now, I'm quite a bit older than the classmate).

I have a fb friend, her daughter wanted to go BACK to Greenland (having just visited) for the summer and asked for donations. I know this friend makes North of 150k (because she mentioned she was excluded from a Roth IRA.)

Not in the least. I hate when people try to guilt people for other things. Do what you what you want to do.
You don’t owe her or her children a cent. If they were your children, I’d say that’s your responsibility. But someone from 34 years ago? Nope. Not your problem. School loans and Pell grants exist for this reason.
