A woman recently moved out of her home that was in an HOA-controlled area. However, she was still getting silly little infractions on the property. The most recent were two different violations stating, basically, the same thing: landscaping. The bushes out front had overgrown, and the branches of her tree were spilling over onto the sidewalk. If anyone wanted a more whimsical, natural-looking garden, they were tough out of luck. This HOA demands their homeowners all have the same cookie-cutter-looking front yards.
So, even though she no longer lived there, she decided to just get it over and done with: DIY style. She took some sewing scissors and went to town on her front yard, landscaping like a toddler. Legendary behavior, if you ask me! It actually looked a lot tidier when she was done, but that's only if you want a garden like that. Some people want their landscaping to look more natural. Oh well!
The best part of all of this? She fixed her HOA violations for $0, by herself, all while wearing a “Defund the HOA” shirt.
This, of course, sparked an HOA discussion in the comment section of her now-viral video. Not surprisingly at all, it is rare to find a single comment in there supporting HOAs. Many complain about them, about how they totally take advantage of homeowners and neighborhoods, and some even explain how their community ended up dissolving their HOA.
I suppose, if you do it right, being part of an HOA could be exhausting. You're basically the groundskeeper for an entire neighborhood, but you also can't control how everyone dresses up their part of the land. In my opinion, that actually should not even be part of the duties of an HOA board member. The HOA should focus on potholes, playgrounds, the happiness of the people in their community, etc. It should not be up to them whether or not you can paint your door yellow. You paid for that door; in fact, you paid for that entire piece of land and the home atop it. You should technically be able to do whatever you want with it. Like, are we serious about HOAs? I thought this was the land of the free…
The commenters are not just jaded homeowners who have experienced the wrath of an HOA before. It also includes foreigners from outside the U.S. who have never even heard of an HOA. It's absolutely mind-boggling to hear about an HOA for the first time. I mean, you are a homeowner; you purchased your own home. Why are you also paying someone else to tell you what to do with it?
Again, if I were ever a homeowner (crying on the inside) I would never opt for an HOA-controlled neighborhood. Would you?
