Calico cat demands a vice-grip neck cuddle every day, turns out it's basically the feline version of a weighted blanket

My cat likes to fall asleep with her face in my hand, and she gets upset if I let go in the middle of her nap. All of this is to say that sometimes, cats have some pawsitively strange preferences for how they like to be held.

First, I need to say that no cats were harmed in the writing of this article, because the phrase "vice-grip neck cuddle" combined with the images below could tell one story, but in reality, they tell a much more wholesome and common one than you would imagine. Her pawrent posted that her cat requests this interaction with her daily, quite confidently, in fact. Think of it less like an MMA move and more like a specific style of snuggle support. Every day, this calico cat cutie climbs onto her hooman, settles herself upright, and demands a hand to gently wrap around her neck and support her head. She purrs and stays there for around 10 minutes, enjoying her strange little spa treatment before deciding the appointment is over, biting her hooman's hand, and leaving. Classic cat behavior right there, folks.

After posting these pictures online and asking whether anyone else's cat behaved this way, the comments quickly filled with other owners saying essentially the same thing: yes. Cats are weird. Welcome to the club, snacks and catnip are on the table to the left.

Cats have pawsitively specific preferences about touch. One feline wants chin scratches, another thinks that even looking at their belly is a criminal offense, and others need someone to purrvide them with a neck pillow every afternoon. That is why understanding consent matters just as much with pets as it does anywhere else (and cats are the ultimate teachers of consent). If a cat repeatedly initiates an interaction, stays relaxed, leans into the touch, and is free to leave whenever they want, that tells us much more than simply deciding "my cat likes this because another cat online does."

This is one of the things I love most about cats, they always have something new to teach you! Even inside something as small as a silly calico cuddle ritual, there is a big lesson hiding inside of it: loving cats is not just about feeding them, cleaning the litter box, and buying them increasingly more expensive cat beds that they will indefinitely ignore. It is about learning their language. And if you're not prepurred for your cat's language to have some unique quirks like this bizarre neck snuggle ritual, then you're in for a world of surprises because cats are some of the most adorable weirdos we let live in our houses.

If you skipped all the way down here without reading anything I wrote above, you're likely to get the wrong idea. Even a purring cat needs context. Cats can purr when they are comfortable, but they can also purr when they are stressed or uncomfortable, just like a dog can wag its tail when it is nervous or unsure. Just like with doggos as well, you have to look at the whole animal. The ears, eyes, tail, posture, tension, and whether they are choosing to remain there. Pets communicate mainly through body language, so you have to learn how to read between the purrs and biiiiiiiig stretches to see how they're really feeling.
