One of our biggest pet peeves as people who write about animals is when people humanize animals too much. When we look at the behavior of animals and project our traits and our ways of loving onto them. Animals have their own ways of expressing love - ways that are obviously very different from ours. Cats, for example, show affection by slow blinking at you, by turning their back toward you, and by just choosing to spend time with you in the same room. Just because your cat doesn't cuddle with you every night doesn't mean that they don't love you. Horses, as another example, show their love by grooming you, standing next to you, coming to say hi to you when they see you. Again, you don't need to expect them to tolerate hugs to know they love you.

What we love here, in this story, is that the affection between the animals is so obvious, you don't need to over-humanize it. The cat is headbutting the horse. The horse is nuzzling the cat. The cat is napping on the horse. The horse is letting the cat sit on it without protest. Their love is so clear and so strong, we only wish that they will have many, many years together to keep being happy like this.
