When you're a kid, you don't always realize all the work your parents are doing behind the scenes to make life possible for you. I certainly didn't. I ran around blithely unaware of what it takes to be a parent. I was too focused on being a kid. And this is the way it's supposed to be. You get to enjoy that ignorance and innocence as a kid. Heck, you even get to enjoy it as a childless adult like I am. Nothing seems like more work than having a kid. The work never seems to stop, no matter where, no matter what time of day.
This time of year, though, it seems fun to be a parent. It seems fun to help your kid pick out a Halloween costume. I used to love Halloween. I still do, but it's different as an adult, and not always as fun. There was such a rush in getting to dress up as your favorite character, back when our relationships with fictional characters were probably a lot more magical than they are now. I didn't just want to be the Little Mermaid. I WAS the Little Mermaid, and nobody could stop me. Plus, at a certain age, you kind of have to stop trick-or-treating. Unless you're accompanying a child. This is why I get jealous of parents this time of year. They get the secondhand joy of taking their kids out to ask for candy, and plus they get to collect the requisite parent candy tax. If I want candy this time of year, I'm probably going to have to pay for it. Who wants to pay for a Butterfinger in October? I sure don't!
So if you're a parent this time of year and you're wanting to feel a little joy, or a little commiseration with the other folks in the parenting community, then you're in the right place. We've got tweets for moms, tweets for dads, and tweets that generally speak to the experience of being an adult this time of year. So scroll on and enjoy them. There will be more next week just for you (and everyone else reading).
