How to understand a doggo's body language
One of the most obvious signs of stress (especially in this video) is what we call “whale eye” - where you can see a lot of white in the dog's eyes. Turning the eyes away while the head remains still.
Yawning and frequent lip-licking is another clear sign. How can you tell the difference between a tired yawn and a stress yawn, you ask? A stress yawn is short, tense, and usually out of context. A tired yawn happens before going to bed or just after waking up with much more relaxed body posture.
Our doggo below is showing a few of these signs, but they're all completely natural responses. He'll get over it in a few minutes, or when he gets distracted by something tasty… like a pup cup!

Don't get me wrong, I love my dog, but after dealing with her fear of everything, I understand why people get golden retrievers or labradors. They're literally bred to be easy family dogs. They're adorable, happy nearly all the time, and the worst thing you have to worry about with them is chewing up your shoes or stealing food from the table. You don't have to worry about reactivity, fear of new locations, and they're usually food-motivated which makes them incredibly easy to train.
My dog, on the other hand, is not food-motivated at all. When she's really stressed, she won't eat at all. Her main driving factor is to find a quiet, calm place to sleep. Even chicken doesn't always work. Chicken. The thing that most dogs love more than anything in the world. Oh well, she's cute, and I love her, and I wouldn't change her for the world.
