I blame the excellent movies we grew up with. Dirty Dancing and Step Up really had us thinking that love was just going to show up on a random family vacation or after school hours, forcing us into participating in a random high-stakes dance competition. I got the dancing classes; now what? I see no Channing Tatums carelessly mopping the floors while hip-hopping around me. What do I know, maybe I didn’t do enough ballet hours or something.

I tried to use my inner confident alter ego to be a dating pro once. It did not go too well for me. You see, I tried to do things the old-fashioned way, me being a romantic and all. I went out for drinks with my friends and saw a cute guy hanging around with his group of friends too. I am usually more the type to text to avoid embarrassment that will come to haunt me in my dreams, but that particular afternoon I thought to myself, why not? My grandparents did it this way, and now I have a hundred relatives. So, I took a deep breath, connected with the self-confidence in me, and approached him.
At first, it went well. Just casual conversation, laughter, and amiability. No pick-up lines, nothing too elaborate. Then, because I felt it was going alright, I took the leap and asked for his number. To my surprise, he actually gave it to me. I still took things with caution. Well, if caution means I immediately saw how our house decoration would look when we moved in together. On that note, I wrote his number down and called it a night.
The next day, I decided to try. A simple “hey, how you doing” Joey-style hello to break the virtual ice. Well, guess what. I got ghosted. Thanks for the incredible self-confidence boost, handsome stranger; please do note the sarcasm.

Yes, dating is hard. And you might have noticed that I have personal experience with completely failing at it. However, I’m still glad I took the chance. It might not have been a “successful” chance, but I was proud of myself for being brave. Also, I’m sure it will work out with the right person. So, here’s your cue to take a chance too, and turn your love story into the next The Notebook remake…or an excellent comedy show. Either way, good luck.
