I'm turning my least productive row into a compost trench this week

The day my pepper plants take hard frost damage is when I pull them and prep that bed for growing garlic that I'll plant on/near halloween.

I'm growing my first fall garden and it's quickly becoming my favorite season!
This bed has spinach and a greens mix. The other half still has my summer peppers (and marigolds)

This is beautiful! My fall garden went in on 9/7, I have decent germination but looking forward to the site of those huge beet and carrot greens! Did you fertilize or just primo soil?

I rough compost using kitchen scraps and brown paper grocery bags and use it to top dress each bed when I sow new seeds. I also mulch with d*ad grass clippings. I think the soil is getting a nice rotation of organic material. -

(Trying) to teach my daughter the joy of gardening. We planted garlic (little 4x4 raised bed) and leeks today. I have Brussel Sprouts and Cabbage that are happy along with a thriving watermelon patch. The advantages of living in St. Petersburg, FL.

I had a great and joyful harvest this weekend, then packed it up in this old Johnny's box and thought it was worth snapping a picture before I ate it all!
And now I'm thinking, what do I plant next? Well…what do you plant next?? I'm thinking lettuce, and what else?

First of all, grow what you like eating. Makes the whole experience much more rewarding and frictionless ??
I like planting arugula, radish and daikon along with the fall lettuce planting, these give me salads all the way through winter and spring, until it's time to transition to summer crops. I do only have an apartment balcony to work with, so these work pretty well. Thought about getting some bok choy, but if I had a garden I'd definitely throw in some beets, carrots, broccoli, garlic, cabbage, brussel sprouts... Plenty of options, fall is a great time of year ??

Anyone else excited about Fall gardening? I know a lot of people prefer Spring & Summer growing but a Fall garden can be just as good! What's your favorite brassicas to grow?

Fall gardening is the best.
In the ground already: carrots, broccoli, chard, collards, two types of cabbage, lacinato kale, 3 varieties of radish, and beets.
On deck: green onions, lettuce, pac choi, cilantro, peas, and spinach.
Another hobby gardener detailed their plan for their fall garden.
I put in rutabaga, beets, lettuce, kale and cabbage, everything in ground except for the cabbage because I wanted to keep a closer eye on that, so I am doing it in a big grow bag in front instead of in my plot, which is around the corner. Most of it takes the place of either bush beans that are done or zucchini/squash that was taken out by SVB. The cabbage is taking the place of carrots I pulled a while back. I also planted some warm weather crops like okra and a replacement zucchini. So far so good. We have a fairly long warm weather growing season so I should get something from those too.
And another response.
Just put broccoli and cabbages in the ground as well as another batch of carrots and green beans (bush). Radishes went in last week and when my sweet potatoes come up I'll be planting lettuce in that bed.

Fall is here
via JobdefinesmeI'm new to gardening and have been building my garden over the last few years to be pollinator friendly because I love watching bees. I got really sad because it's one of my passions to tend to my garden and I was seeing a lot of the summer flowers fade away. I discovered this year the joy of harvesting seeds from some of my plants. Sunflowers, poppies, sweet peas to name a few. Oh man has this got me hooked and excited for next season. Plans are being made for expanding my garden and building something to keep the deer from munching on all the greenery. Just thought I'd share with you all my favourite picture from this summer. Would love some options for fall plants that thrive in the PNW.

I have a big ask of the gardening community ????
I just bought a home with a GORGEOUS wild garden as the entire front yard and surrounding back yard. If I posted them on here can you guys help walk me through what I do as a fall clean up? I moved in late July so I'm currently learning and LOVING this garden. Someone here taught me to harvest the spices before the first frost which I really appreciated ??
One user had this to say to ease their worries:
The good thing about fall cleanup is if you don't do anything, you can just say that you are helping local pollinators (that overwinter under leaves and d*ad plants). I don't do a lot in the fall. The focus is on getting rid of weeds and I'll remove any diseased plants and compost my veggies.
Another gave them this advice.
Winter is going to be more of a cleanup than fall is. You will want to cut any ornamental grasses to the ground just before the new spring growth emerges. Some shrubs need pruning before it warms up.
