People that ordered pizza delivery in the 90s, was it overall a better experience than today's delivery? Why or why not?

This was a time when ordering in was more of an experience than a convenience.

Powerful-Scratch 1579 I just have a different association with ordering pizza back then. Back then the world of food that you could have brought to your doorstep was severely limited. There was pizza and there was Chinese food. The experience involved looking at a menu and

calling from a house phone. Communicating your order to a person on the other end of the phon. The whole experience was a lot more intentional. I was a kid back then so it meant mom was taking the night off from cooking or we were having people over or just hunkering down and spending time with one another.

Now, ordering food online is so accessible and automated- Impersonal. Also I feel like now it's as much an individual experience as a group experience.

It was a simple yet effective process.

JeffSergeant You phone the pizza place, tell them what you want, and hang up. They know who you are and where you live, you pay the driver and eat the pizza. There is nothing in that process that doesn't add value, yet we had to go and change it.

It was pretty impressive to be able to locate places without GPS.

There was better value for money, even if it was less advanced.

JCMS99 There wasn't a 30% over charge by the delivery app. But you couldn't track the guy.

The delivery drivers were usually more attached to a single business.

AEternal1 with the lack of accountability that these modern applications allow for the drivers have no stake in the game and therefore the experience is just garbage. and I know the apps claim that they have accountability but when you can hop from one app to the other no there is no real world accountability anymore.

    Reputable businesses prioritized customer satisfaction.

joseph4th Pizza delivery guy worked for the pizza place and therefore had an interest in doing at least an adequate job. The pizza place had bigger interest in the satisfaction and timeliness of the delivery and had an incentive to fix anything that was wrong.

Not everything was better just because it was the good old days.

SketchyCopierGuy It was the wild west with 30 minute guarantees. Huge incentive to drive like a madman. Even in the 2000's I delivered for Papa Johns. All the delivery drivers were employees. They had special bags you would plug into the ciga tte lighter to keep the pizza hot. We only delivered pizza and it worked really well. After the

р c. They would partially outsource to grubhub, doordash, and Uber eats. Now you don't have an employee of the restaurant. I hate to say this, because I know it sounds terrible. The outsourced drivers, lets say english isn't their thing. So they can't double check if an order is right. You can almost assume if

the delivery goes doordash. Those 2L sodas you ordered. They aren't going to be there. The restaurant expects the driver to read the order and grab the sodas from the side cooler. If I as a driver didn't grab it. I would have to take an unpaid trip back to the customer. The non employee drivers, they just didn't care.

It's still possible to order direct at some places if you want to.

Soft_Ad_1095 Absolutely. No app, no fees, straight from the hot bag. All pizza places should go back to hiring drivers direct. I still have a few places around that do so. It's just better. Granted i usually pick my food up cause i don't want tip anyone.
