Why do we keep coming back to the internet time after time? There is so much for us to discover on here. Anything that you can imagine exists. But we've been doing this design fails list for quite some time. We've seen trends come and go, and internet content preferences change over time. Once upon a time, we were all visiting websites a lot. We had destinations to reach on the internet, and we knew where we wanted to go.
That's not so true anymore. The internet can feel like a deluge of content that we have to sift through. It can be hard to get to the good stuff if we're not sure where to look. There is so much noise to filter out that it can be overwhelming. But one thing has remained true over the course of our lives on the internet: we like to look at fails. We love failure. We love to see it, and we love to laugh about it. Think about all the famous early internet videos. Charlie Bit My Finger could definitely be classified as a fail. Something unintentionally bad happened (the kid's finger got bit), and we're all laughing at it. Scarlet Takes a Tumble is another classic fail. A woman is singing, doesn't expect to fall, and then there she goes. And think about every video you've seen where someone falls or gets hurt, and we're sitting there busting our guts about it. Fail content is baked into the fabric of the internet, and that is not going to change any time soon. We're simple humans, and we like to see things go wrong. It's hardwired into our brains from an early age. We don't have to judge ourselves for that. We can indulge that desire every now and again, in safe ways. As long as we don't go around tripping people on the street just for our entertainment, we're okay. We can come back to the design fails list and know that our needs can be satiated. Then we will come back next week for more.
