See? This is what I mean! If you take the fairytale factor off the movie, you're left with a 30-something guy who likes living alone and just gets dragged involuntarily into situations that require him to socialize and have contact with the outside world, something he clearly doesn't want to do! Otherwise, he wouldn't have built his house in the depths of a swamp. Yeah, the fact that he's an ogre has a lot to do with it, but if you take that out, he's just like any other hermit who goes away and builds a cabin in the woods, or near the mountains, or on the outskirts of a small town. Every year that passes, I become more and more like Shrek, and my wish to be left alone grows along with my age. I understand the poor guy after all these years, and I think that's part of what makes the movie iconic. We all know someone who's a little bit like him, or we can be like him ourselves. We all grow to become like Shrek, whether we want it or not, and rewatching the movies is part of accepting our fate.
