The Other Mother's final transformation still haunts me to this day. And so do the spirits of the children she actually caught. On second thought, it's a terrifying movie, not so much because of the visuals, but because of the concept and its underlying message, for both the parents and the children. Kids should remember that not everyone who's nice to you has good intentions, and if it's too good to be true, it probably is. And for parents, it's good that they are reminded that their children always need their love and attention, even when the whole family is stressed.
Coraline used to get on my nerves at first, but now I kind of understand her. I thought she was a spoiled little girl incapable of empathizing with her family, and to some degree, she is. But she was also still a child; of course she had no idea what her parents were going through! She felt alone, unheard, and left out, and that's why at first she was thrilled when she got to the Other Mother's domain. She was getting the attention she so much craved. And it's not that her parents didn't love her; they did, but they had so much going on that, for a moment, they forgot that their daughter was actually a kid who didn't quite understand all the nuances of adult decisions. It made sense that she went to look for validation elsewhere.

It is also a tale of family love and acknowledging all the good things you have in your life. After Coraline discovers the truth about what she thought was wonderful, she goes back home and realizes how much her parents love her. They were also more relaxed after dealing with all their issues, so they found more time to do things together. Coraline grows up throughout the movie; she ends up being well aware that her parents love her for real, even when she doesn't understand them, or they don't understand her. It's a lovely coming-of-age type of plot disguised as a Halloween movie, and a classic for everybody who loves a good thriller.
