  • My company has been trying to hire another person for our department for months. The job keeps getting reposted and I got curious whether anyone was actually hearing back from HR.
  • Instead of asking like a normal person, I decided to apply myself using a fake name and a throwaway email.

  • I used an older version of my resume, changed a few details and submitted it. My plan was to see how long it took to get a rejection or an interview invitation.

  • What I completely forgot was that the resume included a link to my portfolio.

  • My actual portfolio. With my real name, my photo and the company I currently work for listed right at the top.

  • The recruiter apparently clicked it, recognized me and contacted my manager asking why an existing employee was submitting applications under another identity.

  • Got called into a meeting this morning and had to explain the entire thing. Somehow saying I wanted to test our recruitment process sounded even worse out loud.

  • My manager wasn't amused. He said I'd wasted the recruiter's time and made it look like I was secretly investigating the company.

  • Now HR wants to have a conversation with me about it on Friday. I'm not getting fired or anything, but I genuinely cannot believe I created an HR issue for myself out of pure curiosity.

  • fernofry If there's been a vacancy for months in the current job market then doing a "mystery shop" on the company seems valid. Don't be apologetic, by angry that they haven't filled the position. If they try any kind of disciplinary action, threaten to leave them with another vacancy.

  • Everything you did was in the best interest of your team. At best, you wasted 2 minutes of the recruitment team's time. They wasted more by dragging you into HR meetings.

  • Shroomstarz I mean, hey, at least you got to find out that they DO, in fact, check resumes and whatnot

  • Fegor224422 No f If you can eliminate all evidence and witnesses, you can still get out of this.
