“‘At will’ employment cuts both ways, sister!” —u/Public_Pressure_4516

Boss reminds employees that she has the power to sack people whenever she wants.

“You can quit at any time, you know.”

OP finds a way out.

“I'm leaving. For good.”

“I f*cking skipped right out the door”

Redditors in the comment section cheered OP on, and some shared stories about their own satisfying experiences quitting jobs they hated.

u/Andravisia replied, “Sadly, it's become a fact of life that there will always be 'attrition rates'. They just budget for it, rather than making actual changes that'll make the life of their employees better. Then there's the fact that it's easier to pay one or two dedicated trainers a higher salary for years than it would be to pay dozens of people progressively higher salaries and benefits.”

u/quats5 offered more insight, “I have become the enemy and they are us. I’ve stumbled into becoming HR in my small company and learning what a fight it can be to deal with a pennypinching CEO. We’re close to 50% turnover in the year I’ve been here — I’ve got good pay, great insurance, and a remote job, but getting burnt out over the constant changes and lack of support.”

“good one" added u/Broken_drum_64, "I might have used 'so it's a custom not a rule?'”

Another redditor explained how this wouldn't fly in their country. “In my country the two weeks notice are mandatory (unless you are in the trial period or getting fired is justified and some other exceptions, but that is the general rule).” Said u/ILikeTraaaains. “If you quit on the spot, the two weeks are deducted from your last paycheck, if the employer fires you on the spot without a justified reason (for example, stealing or punching your boss) they have to pay for those days that you should have worked otherwise. My previous employer would rather fire people on the spot and pay the extra than giving the two weeks notice.”
