You remember that Ghost in the Shell adaptation starring Scarlet Johansson? You know, the one that sparked a petition to stop white-washing anime characters in Western films? Well, now a real life Japanese actor/direct/comedian, Beat Takeshi has signed on to the film to play chief of Public Security Section 9, Daisuke Aramaki.
Though Takeshi is not a fan of anime, he took the role because Aramaki "is a fascinating person who gives off a unique presence, and... is at the core of the characters' relationships." As far as what the rest of the characters in this adaptation hold, details are scarce; we know Scarlet Johansson is playing protagonist and cyborg Motoko Kusanagi, but we don't know if the character will be adapted to fit the, uh, distinct racial differences between Johansson and the character that appears in the anime and manga.
The film is currently slated for a March 2017 release.
