Ai mite cawl on yu frum tiem to tiem for advice. *lolspeek off* Smudge was ketotic before we realized what was going on. When the vet said, by the way he's also in heart failure, I couldn't stop crying. She was ready to euthanize him and I asked if there wasn't some way to keep him going without making him suffer. We switched him from a mostly-dry diet to about 95% wet. His insulin dosages decreased gradually over a month or so, until the day he collapsed trying to cross the room - he had gone the other way, into hypoglycemia. The vet said the change in diet alone was enough to keep his blood sugar down. The heart meds (one for high blood pressure, one to regulate his heart rate) are working fine. Sorry for the long post, but I wanted to explain what we've been through. A sense of humor, and support and encouragement from the ICHC community, have helped me keep my sanity - well, what there is of it, anyway. :-) Pee Ess - laffin is teh fun adn itz good for us.

Oh, yeah, birds can be hilarious! I've had lots of different kinds. The best one of all was JoJo, my African Grey...raised her from a baby (btw, birds are just ugly when they're babies). After she reached one year old, she started talking. Her first words were, "Good morning" (in my voice). She learned to sound exactly like whatever sounds she liked and people's voices. Cussing was NOT allowed in my house! You could literally have a conversation with this bird. They're a hoot but they do need lots of attention and interaction.
