This one is going to ruffle a lot of feathers, but according to "sources" (which is another way of saying 'trust me bro'), Sony is planning on remaking one of the greatest—and most misunderstood—sci-fi movies of all time: Starship Troopers.
What seemed to be just a silly popcorn blockbuster about a bug invasion from outer space was actually a cleverly disguised satire about democracy, fascism, and the oh-too-thin line between them. It was so cleverly disguised, in fact, that most audiences and critics completely missed the point. Even today, the internet can't really agree on what the movie is actually trying to say, since it's based on a book but seems to disagree with that source material completely. Is it pro-fascist? Anti-fascist? Who knows. All I know for sure is that the real villain in this movie is Carmen. She single-handedly killed billions of people and started a war with a peace-loving bug society just because she wanted to impress a guy (who she also got killed).
The original Starship Troopers may have flopped at the box office, earning just $121 million, but in the years since, it's become a massive cult hit, spawning sequels, an animated series, and even video games (Yes, Including Helldivers 2). Sony is now reportedly looking to capitalize on that longevity with a remake, which, on paper, makes sense—it's a recognizable IP with an existing fanbase. The real question is: will they actually understand what made the original great, or will they just turn it into another brainless action flick?
Paul Verhoeven's 1997 film, much like RoboCop and Total Recall, worked because it was more than just explosions and cool effects. It was biting satire wrapped in a fun, hyper-violent package. Sony will have a tough time finding a director who can recapture that same magic. If they play it straight and remove the satire, they'll end up proving Verhoeven's point all over again.
Also, let's be real—if they remake Starship Troopers, we deserve a full exposé on Carmen's crimes against the galaxy. Justice for Dizzy!
Thoughts? Will this remake be a brilliant reimagining, or are we about to get another soulless cash grab? Sound off in the comments!
