Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are officially returning to The Mummy franchise in a brand-new sequel from Universal Pictures. Twenty-six years after the original 1999 film, the duo is set to reunite under the direction of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the filmmaking duo behind Scream VI and Ready or Not. David Coggeshall is attached to write the script, with production expected to begin in 2026.
This marks the first time Fraser and Weisz will appear together since The Mummy Returns (2001). Weisz skipped the 2008 sequel, and the 2017 Tom Cruise reboot failed to revive Universal's "Dark Universe" project. This new installment is being positioned as both a return to the adventure-horror tone that made the original a hit and a modern reimagining for a new audience.
Fans online have already expressed excitement over the reunion, celebrating the nostalgic pairing that defined late-90s adventure cinema. The 1999 Mummy remains beloved for its mix of action, humor, and chemistry between Fraser and Weisz, a balance many viewers felt was missing in later entries.
For Universal, the revival is more than a nostalgia play. The studio is leaning into familiar IP with proven fanbases, as seen in recent reboots like Jurassic World and The Invisible Man. Bringing back Fraser and Weisz allows Universal to reintroduce The Mummy to both old fans and a new generation raised on streaming-era monster movies.
If successful, the film could restore The Mummy as one of Hollywood's most bankable adventure properties. And if the original duo still has that magic spark, audiences may be ready to be cursed all over again.
