The coronavirus outbreak is causing massive disruption to the U.S. economy as global supply chains break down, travel is canceled and people practice "social distancing," avoiding everything from restaurants and retail outlets to conferences and office meetings.
Actually, one-fifth of U.S. workers already report losing hours or work because of the pandemic.
The Helen Woodward Animal Center Center in San Diego has decided to do its part to ensure that all pet owners will be able to take care of their animals during these rough days of financial instability.
According to their home page, "The mission of AniMeals is to keep pets in the home regardless of the logistical or financial challenges faced by our clients which include homebound and low-income elderly, physically or psychologically impacted veterans, the disabled, and the homeless".
The center has issued a special message on their website saying that "The Helen Woodard Animal Center's AniMeals program is graciously offering a two week supply of dog and/or cat food for individuals that have been laid off due to the COVID-19 outbreak. We understand the difficulties ahead for you and want to assist with feeding your beloved companions"
In order to qualify for this assistance, you will need to complete an information form including your former company's information along with details about your pets. The center will assist in feeding up to three pets; either dogs or cats and we will email you an allotted time when your food will be available for pick up. In order to satisfy social distancing guidelines, appointment times will be scheduled 10 minutes apart, and participants are being told not to leave their vehicle while picking up their food.
"Keeping families together, healthy and happy is one way we can help others," Christen Hanley, the director of outreach services at Helen Woodward Animal Center, said in a press release. "We're seeing so many members of our community impacted and we hope that this will bring a little peace to families with pets in this time of need," Hanley added.
