There are many ways to reveal a movie cast—some fast and flashy, some slow and dramatic. And then there's what Marvel is doing right now: the world's slowest cast reveal in cinematic history.
It started with a livestream simply titled "Announcement." Naturally, I clicked. I expected a quick montage, maybe some dramatic music, a logo reveal, and a list of A-listers. What I got instead? A camera pointed at a chair. A literal chair. With "Chris Hemsworth" written on it. Twenty long minutes later, the camera slowly panned to a new chair: "Vanessa Kirby." Then, another 20 minutes later "Anthony Mackie." You get the idea.
At the time of writing, we're over four hours in, and the camera is currently fixated on a chair labeled "Ian McKellen." It's like the Oscars met Waiting for Godot. And somehow? Over 120,000 people are currently watching it live on YouTube. Add in Twitch commentators, Twitter reactions, and TikToks breaking down "chair lore," and this might be the most boring AND effective hype machine Marvel has ever built.
The cast reveal is for Avengers: Doomsday, which reportedly includes 60-70 characters. At 20 minutes per chair, that's… 22+ hours of chairs.
Update: Well, It was a little over 5 hours long and it ended with the shocking revelation that Robert Downey Jr is in the movie!!!… Wait, we all knew that already. anyway… here is the full list of actors and actresses revealed during the live:
