When Christian Meyer, who lives in Berlin's Zehlendorf neighborhood, noticed that one of his new running shoes went missing from his front porch, he decided to search for his expensive shoe until he found it. After some investigating and a tip from another shoe victim, Meyer found the mastermind behind dozens of missing shoes: a fox.
Meyer spotted the crafty fox and photographed it as it carried two blue flip flops in its mouth. A few days later, Meyer saw the thief again. He decided that the fox deserved to be brought to justice and followed it into a thicket. Undeterred, Meyer crawled around inside the thicket for an hour until he discovered the fox's stash of stolen goods: over 100 shoes.
The illegal shoe collection contained a wide range of shoes, including clogs, sneakers, flip flops, sandals, but most prolific were the Crocs. It appears that the fox has a fetish for Crocs, no matter what size or color. Some shoes were alone, and a few had been stolen in pairs. All of the shoes were gnawed, just a little.
Experts are unable to uncover why the fox prefers Crocs over other, more fashionable shoes. But one thing is certain: this fox has a serious shoe fetish. Residents of Berlin: keep your shoes inside.
While this fox may have changed its ways, urban foxes are known for stealing not just shoes, but newspapers, wallets, your fish, golf balls, GoPros, and quite possibly, your heart. (Metaphorically. If you look at these photos of adorable baby foxes). So watch out.
